We’ve finished the roads, water upgrades and footpaths around One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha.
Major road and water pipe upgrades around One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha finished in July 2025.
Work started in July 2024 and involved replacing 5.5km of pipes and upgrading Barbadoes, Tuam and Madras Streets with new footpaths, gardens, street furniture, pedestrian crossing and traffic lights.
The Te Kaha Surrounding Streets package of work aimed to support the growing south-east central neighbourhood and make it easier for people travelling around the city's new stadium.
The final layer of asphalt and paving on the footpaths around the stadium was completed in December 2025, tying the One NZ Stadium grounds into the surrounding neighbourhood.
The project cost $34 million, with $11.4 million of this earmarked for the necessary water supply, wastewater and stormwater pipes that are at the end of their life. This entire package of work was approved as part of the Council’s Long Term and Annual Plans and is separate from the $683 million budget approved for the construction of the stadium.
24 February 2026. We’re doing some night works around One NZ Stadium at Te Kaha, from Sunday 1 March. Our contractors will be doing some routine maintenance of the paved areas around the stadium precinct. They'll also be sprucing up the line markings and generally making sure everything is in tip-top shape ahead of the stadium opening in April. The night works will take place from Sunday to Wednesday night, 7pm to 6am. We expect it will take three nights to complete, depending on weather and site conditions. Read the full start works notice(external link). The major roadworks around the stadium finished up in late 2025. From the evening of Sunday 1 March 2026, some night works will be taking place to complete paver maintenance. Thank you for your patience. You can find the latest traffic management information(external link) on the Isaac Construction webpage. Consultation on the Te Kaha Surrounding Streets package of works was held from 10 October 2022 to 30 November 2022. We received feedback from 1,214 individuals, businesses and organisations during the consultation period. Hearings took place in April 2023. The Council's Finance and Performance Committee approved the plan(external link)(external link) on 28 June 2023. The approved plan included a revised, hybrid option for Lichfield Street(external link) between Manchester and Madras Streets. The refined option will see it retain its current dual-direction state, but with a 10km speed limit to ensure it remains safe for pedestrians. The upgrade to Lichfield Street West will cost $4.5 million; this is $1.2 million more than the original option, which would have transformed the street into a one-way, pedestrian-safe road.
