The council is required to have a district plan under section 31 of the Resource Management Act 1991.
The Christchurch City Plan and the Banks Peninsula District Plan, which have been in force since the 1990s, have been reviewed and a new Christchurch District Plan is now operative.
The Canterbury Earthquake (Christchurch Replacement District Plan) Amendment Order (No2) 2015 withdrew the Coastal Hazard provisions from the new plan from 15 October 2015. As a consequence of that withdrawal, the provisions of the Christchurch City Plan and the Banks Peninsula District Plan that relate to coastal hazards continue to apply. The provisions of those plans that still apply are set out in this table(external link).
