Gully traps
Gully traps are essential for managing wastewater from your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. These traps are basins located in the ground outside your home, typically against an outside wall. Every house has at least one.
Why it matters:
- Prevent overflows: When too much rainwater enters the sewer system, it can cause overflows onto roads, residential properties, and into the environment. By keeping your gully traps clear and in good repair, you help prevent this.
- Protect your home: Gully traps ensure that in case of a blockage, wastewater overflows outside rather than inside your home.
How to maintain gully traps:
- Check regularly: Ensure your gully traps are clear of debris and in good condition.
- Keep them elevated and covered: Make sure your gully traps are raised off the ground and covered with a grate. This prevents stormwater and other foreign matter from entering the wastewater network.
- Perform maintenance as needed: Gully traps may need to be cleaned out, re-sealed, or replaced periodically. This is the responsibility of the property owner.
By properly installing and maintaining your property’s private plumbing, you can help protect our wastewater network and environment.
