The Wainui and Tikao Bay Wastewater Treatment Plants are in two small bach communities in Akaroa Harbour. Both of these plants discharge their treated wastewater to land, where it is used to irrigate forest covered areas.

Wainui Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)

Wainui WWTP was privately built by the developer of the Seaview Lane subdivision and used to discharge treated wastewater to the harbour, before this was diverted to land irrigation in 2013.

Tikao Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)

Tikao Bay is on a steep gradient and the plant was built to protect the bay from being polluted. The treated wastewater is irrigated on a block of pine trees across the road.
